WordPress Blog Maintenance Checklist

As a blogger, it is important to maintain your site regularly! For many people, this simply means writing a post every day (or whatever their blogging schedule is set).

This is true for the blogger who just started out this past week. But once you have about 10 posts up and visitors come to your site to read what you are writing about, you have a little more responsibility than just blogging away!

If you have multiple blogs, it can be easy to get caught up in keeping track of what you have to do for each site. Did you remember to blog? Did you reply to the comments left by visitors? Did you check for updates? Is spam building up? There are so many things to consider!

Yup! Just writing a blog is the easy part. Maintaining a blog is a little more tricky! It is like a teenager who just got his/her license. To a teen, driving means adding gas in the car. We all know, however, that driving also means insurance, oil changes, and new axle boot covers (whatever that is… it went on my car recently!).

Daily WordPress Maintenance Tasks

  • Checking Comments
  • Deleteing Spam (comments)
  • Replying to Comments
  • Checking any incoming Links
  • And Check the dashboard for any important WP notices.

Weekly WordPress Maintenance Tasks

  • Checking for Plugin Updates
  • Checking that the website was backed-up properly
  • Checking for any updates on addons/widgets (if you site is still using them)
  • Monitoring the bandwidth and storage for the website for any unusual activity
  • Reviewing the server uptime statistics

Monthly WordPress Maintenance Tasks

  • Checking that all links are still good and not broken
  • Validating that your HTML and CSS are correct using validator.w3.org (and ensuring your plugins and themes are compliant)
  • Reviewing your bandwidth usage and determining if your hosting account is sufficient
  • Monitoring the bandwidth and storage for the website for any unusual activity and if your hosting account is sufficient.

Keep in mind, some of these tasks may not be required for you and your site – just keep it in mind and if you exclude a task, know why are you are excluding it – it should have a reason.

To help with all the things you need to do, I found a great little template that you can down download it here – wordpress-blog-checklist

Please be aware that this is not mine, I only found it online! I have already used for a couple of days! So far, so good! As I use it, I may create my own in the future. If I do, I will share it.

Thank you, Paul, for providing such a wonderful resource for both new bloggers and veterans who have been doing this for a while. Further – it may not originate from you, but it is helpful to share the wealth of your experience.

We all gain from each other, as you model for us over and over again!
